The Importance of Implementing a Health Disaster

Both a professor and the founder of a healthcare investment firm, Dr. Mitchell Blutt specializes in internal medicine. In a recent issue of the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, Dr. Mitchell Blutt co-authored an article that discusses the importance of implementing a national dashboard system tracking critical care resources in response to a healthcare crisis.

Presently, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a database that operates in real time. However, Dr. Blutt’s argument is for a national dashboard in the White House specifically for critical care resources that would track data to help stop the spread of the disease in a healthcare crisis.

Making an analogy to the war room that was created in response to the Bay of Pigs, the authors suggest that creating a situation room that includes a dashboard would be a more effective way of responding to and controlling a national health crisis. In a centralized location where the president and other cabinet officials work, this dashboard could provide key information on the spread of the disease, available hospital beds, supplies, etc.

Moreover, hospitals could report data from their electronic health records systems to the national dashboard in real time. The president and other cabinet officials could then make more informed decisions by using this information.

This dashboard would also transmit information to other US agencies. For example, it could be a reference point for FEMA, the Public Health Service, and the Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response, which are all under the umbrella of the president’s administration.
