FEDRIGONI X OLIVER BONAS
Candle Packaging

“THE CREATIVE CHALLENGE
We want you to create the packaging for a new range of candles for our SS20 collection. The Oliver Bonas SS20 Tierra moodboards, which can be found in the project pack, are to be used to form the narrative of your designs. Your packaging concept will need to support 4 designs that work together as a collective.

CREATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Showcasing the potential of the Fedrigoni range, your submission will need to include the following:
– Outer packaging for the four candles.
– The label that will go on the vessel (the container for the actual candle).
– Any other tactile paper or card elements that you feel will support the product story.
– A name for the range.

CUSTOMER PROFILE
The predominant Oliver Bonas customer is female and in her mid-20s to mid-40s — although she’s more easily defined by her mindset than her age.
She is intelligent, confident and well-read, with a discerning eye and a great attention to detail.
She takes a great interest in the world around her, keeping up with politics, culture, travel and current affairs.
She puts a high value on health, happiness and well-being.
She works hard to get the most out of life and live a life she loves.
She’s style-conscious and aware of trends but picks and chooses what works for her.
Her look is fresh, relaxed, simple and feminine.
Approachable and open-minded with a light-hearted outlook on life, she’s also very decisive and aware of when the wool is being pulled over her eyes.”

Initial Sketches & Ideas:

To start this project, I began researching various fragrance combinations for candles and what they promote to give me inspiration on a corresponding design:

Tapir – Lavender and Juniper (Promotes good sleep) Association tapir’s have with dreams and eating/relieving nightmares.

Salamander – Sandalwood, Cedar, Pine, Pinon, Oak Moss (smoky, earthy fragrance). Salamander’s association with fire, being birthed from fire.

Daruma Doll – Green Tea and Yuzu (Concentration, clarifying) Daruma folklore of monk concentration. Also, the monk introduced green tea to Japan and China.

Koi – Watergrass, Aquatic fragrances (Peace, tranquillity, destress) / Crane – Aquatic Fragrances (Peace of mind, balance, tranquillity, grace, destress)

Based on these prompts, I began sketching thumbnails and developing the visual direction I wanted to take with the project, keeping the feminine audience in mind.
Refining ideas:

Based on my initial sketches, I began refining my favourite ideas, deciding to keep a theme with the use of ‘fragrance lines’ in composition. I also gave each character closed eyes, which I kept as I believe it added a feminine look to each design.
To reflect the Japanese-inspired iconography I was using for these designs, I decided to download and use an ink-brush texture for outlines, alongside a watercolour texture for colouring. Out of this experimentation, I gathered a greater sense of direction for the aethetic of this project, as well as for the form of the salamander design, which I changed to give it more visual balance.
Based on these designs, I made mockups of how I imagined they’d look on a candle, with each candle having a tinted glass / lacquered interior and an earthenware exterior.
I also made mockups of the box the candles would be packaged in, coming up with designs based on the watercolour-inkbrush aethetic I had used for my artwork. I also designed the back, which informs the customer of the scents of each candle, and what the fragrances promote.
I worked this up further, writing flavour-text for the side of the box, providing a place to put the ingredients, and compiling my chosen look for the front with the back.
“Inspired by Japanese culture, the fragrances of this bespoke candle set have been carefully chosen to promote stability in both Body & Mind.

Allow the scents of Woodsmoke & Sandalwood to invigorate you like a firey salamander,

The citrus smell of Yuzu & Green Tea to sharpen your senses,

The cooling tranquillity of Watermint & Sea Minerals to cleanse your mind,

And the calming fragrance of Lavender & Juniper to help lull you into a restful sleep.”

After deciding on my visual direction, I produced finalised artwork of my candle label designs. I altered a few aspects of their design, such as the salamander having a red belly instead of back (a reference to a fire-bellied newt), as well as adding a few more juniper berries and lavender flowers around the tapir design to give it a stronger sense of balance.
I then made refined mockups of what these designs would look like on a candle, both front and back:
As well as a refined version of my packaging design. I moved the flavour text from the side to the top flap to give the box a more inviting presence, as the text can be read before opening. It also looked cleaner, as the text wasn’t crowded onto a small side. I did the same for the ingredients list, which I moved to the bottom of the box. Here is the design I finalised:
"Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, I was unable to produce a physical version of this box design, so this project is completed for now."
