Promotional Poster – Week 8 #mvm20 #s5039560

Week 8 – Promotional Poster

This project required first year university students to create a poster promoting the upcoming tour of the fictional band "Munch Overheard" and their two supporting acts. The band is described as 'ambient-acid-jazz-liquid-funk' and requires the poster to be both for digital and print uses.

A sketch from the art director was supplied and is pictured below.

Process Documentation
Below is a collection of snapshots (with captions below) of my artwork I created using Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, for illustrative purposes.

I first began by browsing Unsplash for three photos that I felt best reflected the names of the bands supplied by the client.

I decided to use this photo (pictured above, centre) by Yannis Papanastasopoulos as my main photo. It was chosen for a variety of reasons including: the large, crowd-filled, industrial look of the space in the photo; the dark background that has been faded into the black background of the poster; and the white neon elements on stage providing a strong sense of straight, rectangular geometry to the poster's visual design when coupled with the 'special guests' divider line and frames of the supporting acts' images.

To the left is this photo by Joshua Fuller used to represent the first supporting act "From All Invisible" and was chosen as the pink smoke obscures the artist rendering her somewhat 'invisible' and provides a splash of colour against a monochromatic background.

To the right is this this photo by Frankie Cordoba, used to represent the second supporting act "Obviousness" and was chosen as the photo portrays the band to be laid-back and relaxed. It also provides a level of detail (owing to the background elements and large use of patterns) contrasting its composition from the rest of the media.
I then created a document in Adobe InDesign, as per the brief requirements (A3 size, 5x4 grid with 3mm gutter, 20mm page margins).

I added rectangular frames to serve as placeholders for the images I would later place in the artwork and added text frames.

Next, I added the text supplied by the client, according to their sketch, in a simple sans-serif font with regular font weight.

I then added my three images, as well as making the background black and test white. I also added a subtle stroke around the images for the two supporting acts.

I felt that the layout needed tweaking, so I changed the position for some of the text, as well as increased the column gutter width and moved the rows to better allow for the desired visual appearance of the final artwork.

Lastly I added in the fonts of my choosing to help depict the various bands'/acts' look and feel, as well as other graphic elements to increase the visual appeal of the poster.

The time-lapse above depicts how the artwork changed at various stages of development.

Above is the version of the final artwork that would be used for printing, including both the crop and bleed markings.

To create this portfolio and to best show off my artwork, I embedded it into a poster mockup found on Behance using Adobe Photoshop. Below is my final result.
