The National Human Genome Research Institute paired with our Communication Design class to create educational games for middle school students that taught a specific scientific topic. I was partnered with a biology student, and together we chose a topic, researched the target audience, and discovered that students have about a 20-minute attention span and enjoy games that aren’t overtly educational. As a multidisciplinary team, we used each others’ strengths to create original and educational gameplay. Our solution was to teach mitosis through an army-themed card game that requires players to recognize the phases of mitosis, duplicate their cell soldiers, and rise in military rank. Mission: Mitosis will be used in middle school classrooms as part of their curriculum.
