Certificates for the World Rubik's Cube Championship

Client: World Cube Association
Event: World Rubik's Cube Championship 2017
As an active member of the cubing community I was offered by the Organization Team of the 2017 World Rubik's Cube Championship the mesmerizing opportunity of having carte blanche to design the scoresheets and diplomas for this worldwide event.
A totally unconstrained and disruptive approach was taken as until then the championship certificates were based on standardized, downloadable templates in Word or Powerpoint formats and there was no precedent for community-oriented designs.

At the core of this project lies the idea of creating certificates that participants would be pleased to see hanging on the wall of their room, not only because of their inherent merit but also because of their aesthetic qualities.

We are bound together by the passion for a game.
We love challenges.
We like patterns, geometry, colors, brainteasers.

The visual identity of the project will therefore pivot around the Rubik's cube itself and the spatial vision, features that will render alive the playful central figure of the diplomas and the patterns generated for the background frames. Thus, the design acquires the attributes of the puzzle through the use of geometric shapes and symmetrical, clean compositions reminiscent of the Swiss style.

An orthogonal pattern was used to draw these figures and toy with different positions, angles and alternative distributions to optimize the readability of the numbers 1-2-3.
The chromatic range, naturally, was based on three colours of the six faces of a Rubik's Cube and the logo of the World Cube Association:

Yellow, for first position. Chosen for its similarity to gold and for being the face of the cube for which 90% of the participants finish a resolution.
Blue, for the second position. Chosen for its resemblance to the icy greyness of silver.
Green, for the third position. Chosen for its complementarity, being the combination of the two colours above and the opposite face to the blue one in a cube. Also, green doesn’t overshadow the yellow used for the 1st position, as red or orange would do alternatively.

Certificates were designed for the three top positions of the 18 official categories of the championship:
2x2x2 Cube, 3x3x3 Cube (Rubik's Cube), 4x4x4 Cube, 5x5x5 Cube, 6x6x6 Cube, 7x7x7 Cube, 3x3x3 Blindfolded, 4x4x4 Blindfolded, 5x5x5 Blindfolded, 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, 3x3x3 With Feet, 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, 3x3x3 One-Handed, Clock, Megaminx, Pyraminx, Skewb, Square-1.

Finally, three more certificates to recognize the fastest resolution, the eldest participant and the youngest, for whom, being a child, a smiley face made of 6 cubes was arranged :)

Awards ceremony.
Special thanks to Philippe Virouleau from the WC2017 Organization Team.
The certificates can also be downloaded from the World Cube Association website.

Thank you for your time!
