Instead of starting off with the Messaging Screen, I have conceptualized it with the contacts on the main screen along with the user details.
You will have all your contacts on the apps main screen in a gird view in the background. Once the user tab to scroll vertically through the contacts on anywhere on the screen the User Details will fade away and you wil just left with the contacts.
