A Fight Against Antisemitism and One for Freedom

New York entrepreneur Shalom Lamm is a military historian responsible for launching Operation Benjamin. As a part of Operation Benjamin, Shalom Lamm assisted the families of those lost at war with having their relatives grave markers replaced with the Star of David.

Operation Benjamin is just one of a few projects that have taken place over the years recognizing the contribution that Jewish soldiers have made to the war. However, other projects focus on the strength many Jewish soldiers had in the face of fighting two wars-one in the theaters and the other in the minds of those who fought alongside them.

Some were enlisted and others were drafted, but many of the 550,000 Jewish soldiers who fought recounted a similar experience of being united in a cause to remove the Nazi ideology from the world. However, a very glaring irony existed for many Jewish people in that they were fighting for freedom but being bound by Antisemitism within their own ranks.

The stories are very similar in nature - a soldier working within a social construct and then abruptly confronted with a common rationale for meting out some injustice. Whether being singled out for their ethnicity or being in terrifying situations within the German camps, Jewish-American soldiers stood their ground, some finding friendships and camaraderie among the soldiers who made up their unit and others who manages to make it to safety through their own grit and determination.
