What Is the Phalanx Weapon System?

David Schnell is a former captain in the United States Navy that currently serves as general manager of Los Angeles Express Lanes for the Americas Commercial and State Transportation Group. During his Navy service, Captain David Schnell commanded two US Navy warships, the USS Ford and the USS Peleliu.

A Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, the USS Peleliu was formally commissioned on May 3, 1980. The ship, which was nicknamed both The Fighting Five and Iron Nickel, weighed over 39,000 tons when fully loaded, and accommodated a variety of military aircraft on board. Moreover, the Peleliu carried armaments that included missile launchers, bushmaster guns, machine guns, and the Phalanx weapon system.

The Phalanx armament is a close-in weapon system designed and manufactured by Raytheon, a technology firm that specializes in defense and cyber security solutions. A rapid-fire gun, the Phalanx system offers security against anti-ship missiles and other close-in threats. The weapon features radar guidance and computer controls in addition to providing early attack warnings.

Currently, all US Navy surface combatant ship classes carry the Phalanx weapon system, as do ships in 23 allied countries.
