Mitchell Blutt's profile

A Partnership for Change in Health Care Affordability

New York City resident Mitchell Blutt, MD founded one of the premier health care investment firms in the country, Consonance Capital. After earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in the early 1980s, Dr. Mitchell Blutt earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the same university.

The University of Pennsylvania has a proven track record of educating the country’s most innovative business leaders, but it has also facilitated driving health care policy through the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (LDI).

The University established LDI in 1967 as a bastion of scholarly research and discussion around the topics of health care finance. In addition to creating a program that produces scholars that pioneer health services research, LDI (one of the first university programs to do so) has collaborated with some of the nation’s most notable organizations to facilitate important scholarship on the subject.

Most recently, LDI partnered with the United States of Care (USofCare) to research the affordability of health care in the country. Technology has advanced health care and has made some progress for many of the insured and uninsured. However, as of 2018, close to 25 percent of Americans believe health care was still an important issue to be addressed and 61 percent of Americans were concerned with rising costs. The collaboration hopes to look at health care affordability from the perspective of both the consumer and the data provided from research. In the end, the research should culminate in finding answers to how consumers perceive the ability to pay for health care and how to address their needs based on market data.
