(2019) Functional Design For Migrant Workers & Kvadrat

PILLOW - BAG
During this project, we aim to create items for migrant workers that are functional, durable and suited to their conditions and lifestyles.
The visit to the construction site gave us an insight into the work enviroment, conditions and lives of the workers. We sat down to talk to a few workers to retreive more in depth information from primary sources. The workers woke up around 5:30 - 6am, they take about 2 hours drive to work by a truck. It was said that the weather conditions are either rainy or hot and they work from monday to saturaday, sunday is their day off. Each worker had around 2-3 changes of work uniforms and their uniforms are hot to wear and is made out of a hot material. If they are sick, they will only get up to 1-2 days of MC leave before going back to work. Their meals are home cooked and they would bring it to work everyday for meal break. They get an hour break everyday from 12 - 1 pm to eat lunch and the first half an hour is spend eating while the other half is spend sleeping on the hard uncomfortable tables.

ANALYSIS

After analysing the conditions , me and my group mates have decided to solve their resting problem. They are always fatigue and have lack of sleep from 6 days of hard labor with uncomfortable sleeping conditions. We decided to create a product that helps to maximise the rest time for the workers while having a dual functionality in the product.

MATERIALS

Considering the materials used, it should not be too warm or too heavy (Such as chains, metals, belts and Buckles). The desired materials should be made of cooling and waterproof materials.

CONCEPT

We noted that silhouettes shouldn't be overly exaggerated as functionality should be the main point in our design. We decided to create a tote bag that can be reversed to a head pillow. While using firm yet cooling fabric inside out, our targetted consumer can use it as a bag when they go out on their off days and a pillow when they work. That way, it can improve their sleeping condition and maximise the short time of rest during their work breaks
