Proper Protocol for Young Actor Casting Calls

Attorney Steven C. Beer shares his years of expertise in the entertainment industry through his book, "Your Child's Career in Music and Entertainment: The Prudent Parent's Guide from Start to Stardom," and his podcast Prudent Parents. On his podcast, Steven C. Beer interviews other entertainment professionals to advise parents on how to handle their child’s acting or music career. In an interview with casting director Eric Souliere, he discusses the appropriate etiquette for a casting call.

During a casting call, directors are accessing parental behavior alongside the child’s ability. For this reason, parents should do their best to be respectful and make a good first impression. But foremost, parents should be mindful of their child’s emotional and physical state. If the child is too tired or sick to perform, it is best to skip the audition.

Further, parents should remind their children to be polite and keep their voices down in the waiting room. Since most directors prefer to only screen children suitable for the role, bringing siblings to an audition is generally frowned upon. After the audition, parents also should refrain from asking for updates or feedback.
