ASA Survey Highlights Growing Interest in Alternative

The recipient of a doctor of osteopathic medicine from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine in California, Aarohi Ambardekar is a consultant anesthesiologist who has worked as a partner at Southern Maryland Anesthesia Associates since 2005. Supplementing his experience in this capacity, Dr. Aarohi Ambardekar holds membership with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).

Established in 1905, the ASA works to advance the practice of anesthesiology via advocacy and educational resources, among other strategic pillars. In September 2019, the ASA released the results of its pain management survey, which found that the 75 percent of millennials in the US open to using marijuana or cannabinoids to alleviate pain symptoms believe they are both safer alternatives to opioids and other medications. In addition, 37 percent of millennial respondents confirmed they have used THC or CBD for pain, while only 18 percent of baby boomers confirmed using these drugs to help with pain.

Responding to the results of the survey, ASA President Linda J. Mason, MD, expressed concern about the lack of research into the effectiveness and safety of marijuana and cannabinoids for pain management. Most marijuana products are not subject to regulations, and the FDA has only approved one CBD prescription for patients with rare variations of epilepsy. Yet only 57 percent of survey respondents felt more research is required. For its part, the ASA has endorsed the Medical Cannabis Research Act of 2019 and the Cannabidiol and Marijuana Research Expansion Act.
