Motion Design for Melbourne Jazz Festival 2019

Motion Graphic Project
This project is for my university assignment.

Design rationale
The Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF) is an annual music festival held in Melbourne. The festival aims to encourage as many people as possible to attend. To help promote this event, I appeal to a young to a middle-aged group through a modern design that has a bold and funky style. I plan to do this through a promotional video that will be put on YouTube, social media and the MIJF website for good coverage.

The title sequence of my video informs the viewer of dates and introduces some of the artists performing to build suspense for the event. The main colour scheme and fonts used within my video are consistent with the MIJF website to keep the theme consistent with the branding of MIJF.

To give the video some depth and help bring the still images to life, I edited each photo in Photoshop, separating the subjects from the background. I filmed extreme close-ups of musical instruments to give the video some dynamic and placed the clips in-between the artist introductions so that the video had a better flow. Finally, for the music, I chose the song “Swagism” performed by Ghost-Note. Swagism is powerful and elaborate, and it will help hold my audience’s attention throughout the 1 min long video.

What is the event?
The Melbourne International Jazz Festival is an annual, world-class jazz festival first held in 1998 The festival is being held from 1 – 10 June. The Festival takes place in concert halls, arts venues, jazz clubs and throughout the streets of
Melbourne. The festival program aims to appeal to young and old, to enthusiasts and the uninitiated, to encourage as many people as possible to experience the very personal impact that jazz can have on its listener.

How could you connect with that community?
Design needs to be simple solid colour palette, with sans serif font to express a passion and energy. I also want kinetic typography for an abstract movement to attract young adults to middle age.
