Napa Valley’s New Breed of Quality White Wines

Antoine Chaya is a longtime IT management professional who held executive responsibilities with Oracle Corporation. A wine enthusiast, Antoine Chaya particularly enjoys vintages harvested and bottled in Napa Valley.

While Napa Valley has been associated with red wines such as cabernets since the 1990s, in the past decade white blends and sauvignon blancs have made significant inroads. As reported in Bloomberg, quality white wines were previously limited to a few wineries, such as Robert Mondavi and Spottswoode. The majority of whites were produced simply because of the fast turnaround, with grapes harvested in the fall appearing on the shelves by the next spring.

A new breed of wineries is now producing sauvignon blancs worth storing, including Dana Estates, Coup de Foudre, and Arkenstone. Known for creating a complex wine, Screaming Eagle has a 300-bottle limited production that is sought after by connoisseurs, with the 2010 vintage approaching $5,000 a bottle.

Hudson Vineyards grows 10 white varieties, from greco di tufo to albarino, and is focused on creating complex blends under the Carneros appellation. These take advantage of Napa’s consistently long growing season, which allows a wide range of varietals to be grown.
