An alumnus of Massachusetts' Northfield Mount Hermon School, James "Jim" Ahern is a health care investment banker who has served as head of capital markets at Laidlaw & Company since 2010. Outside of his professional pursuits, Laidlaw & and Company’s James “Jim” Ahern enjoys following his favorite Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Boston Red Sox.

Despite the fact that he helped shape the roster of the 2018 World Series-winning Red Sox, Dave Dombrowski was relieved from his position as the team's president on September 8. The 63-year-old executive's contract extended through the 2020 season, but Boston was eight games outside of the playoffs and 17.5 games back of rival New York Yankees at the time of his dismissal. Senior vice president Raquel Ferreira and assistant general managers Brian O'Halloran, Zack Scott, and Eddie Romero were assigned to oversee the baseball operations department for the remainder of the 2019 season.

The decision to fire Dombrowski was particularly surprising given the team was less than a year removed from winning the World Series. Following the team's 10-5 loss to New York on the day of Dombrowski's dismissal, Boston's manager Alex Cora said he was "surprised and shocked."

Dombrowski has been working in the front office for MLB teams since 1978, when he was hired as an administrative assistant by the Chicago White Sox. He became general manager of the Montreal Expos 10 years later, and has since served in a similar capacity with the Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers. The Red Sox hired him in August 2015.
