Product & Project Overview.

Product Overview

The eSPEAR is the world's first handheld electrical shark deterrent. Designed in Australia by Ocean Guardian & Powered by Shark Shield Technology; it's the world’s only scientifically proven and independently-tested electrical shark deterrent technology. Designed to reduce the risk of an unwanted shark encounter.

The eSPEAR is primarily designed for those spearfishing who whilst aware of their surroundings; are wanting to protect their catch and themselves from overly inquisitive sharks. Sharks have short-range electrical receptors in their snouts used for finding food. Shark Shield Technology is used to create a powerful three-dimensional electrical field which causes spasms in these sensitive receptors turning sharks away.

There are no known harmful effects on sharks or humans.

Project Overview

eSPEAR Box Design / DL Insert / A5 User Manual Cover / Hero Graphic

Recently tasked with designing and executing the complete packaging project for the Ocean Guardian eSPEAR  - The full scope included a printed box design for retail including layout, graphic design and custom illustrations, a DL instructional insert and product user manual cover design.

I also created 3D mock-ups which were used in the initial design phase to determine which colour box the client would ultimately manufacture - saving design time and eliminating the need to consider alternate colour ways and extra design variations prior to moving forward into the artwork phase. The narrow box design was pre-determined as the eSPEAR is packaged in a fully deployed position (fully extended). The box was to include an instructional DL flyer - the DL insert was to depict step-by-step illustrations of the product activation sequence with additional user warnings and safety information.

While the overall packaging job itself was to be considered... the client had also requested the implementation of an abstract 'hero' graphic to be developed. The 'hero' graphic was to represent an abstract visual concept of an electrical field (relating to the use of electrical fields in the products core technology).

The 'hero' graphic that was to be developed would also evolve to be extended across future design and marketing collateral for the Ocean Guardian brand.
Thinking Outside The Box...

Pre-Visuals & Product Mock-Ups

Creating the box mock-ups from the start of the project not only helped me later in the actual artwork phase (by having a clearer understanding of the spatial relationship of all the graphic elements when the box was folded, while designing in the 2-dimensional artwork plane)... but more importantly it allowed the client to visualise a finished product from the get-go. While there were initial thoughts to manufacture a dark blue or black box, the client ultimately opted for the sleek & minimal look of the white box after comparing the different 3D visuals.

Using Cinema4D & Mograph Animation To Create Our Hero Graphic

I created the hero 'Pulse' graphic using Cinema4D. After exploring a few different styles including linear curves and more random patterns I ended up settling for a more uniformed waveform pattern quite simply with a sphere, a cloner and some noise shading to explore the abstract electrical field concept.

Animating the noise inside the shader and varying the camera angle on the plane allowed me to create unique variations of the same graphic concept until the desired pattern & final look was achieved.

With Cinema's Sketch & Toon - I exported the selected frame from C4D to Adobe Illustrator which provided me with a flexible, scalable and fully editable .ai vector file. The vector graphic was then implemented into the box design and layout - ultimately used in the project to define the spot plate for the metallic silver foil printing on the box.

Creating Custom Illustrations For The DL Instruction & Safety Insert.

I took selfies while holding the actual eSPEAR product in various poses, then traced my hands in Adobe Illustrator to create the graphics used on the insert. The minimal eSPEAR illustration that I had previously created for the side of the box was re-used here also... breaking apart the line work and masking it at various sections along the barrel with the illustrated hands in place to suggest the eSPEAR in its retracted, unfolding and fully deployed position.
