A History of the French Bulldog

French Bulldogs, which look like small Bulldogs but with large ears, date back to the early 1800s when Normandy lace workers from England moved to France to find work and brought smaller Bulldogs with them to chase away the rats. These dogs became very popular due to their hardiness and bulldog breeders began selling their undersized dogs to the French.

The French Bulldog quickly became fashionable within the upper class and royal circles, and in the early 1900s they were considered a dog of high society. One French Bulldog, insured for $750, even traveled on the Titanic.

Today French Bulldogs are still considered excellent companions - even-tempered and mild-mannered but also caring and demanding of attention. They are ideal dogs for city living, as French Bulldogs do not require a lot of exercise outdoors and prefer to be inside with their owners. While they don’t bark much, they are alert and make good watchdogs. They also get along well with humans and other animals.
