UofA - Through the Looking Glass

The Project
The University of Alberta Through the Looking Glass project was an ambitious effort to convey the difficulties of living with different eye conditions. Since this virtual reality project was meant to be shown at an annual fundraiser gala, our goal was to keep it fun and lighthearted.

Final VR Application
The player starts at the bottom of the rabbit hole, faced with a book and three mirrors.
We worked very closely with the University of Alberta Department of Ophthalmology to ensure that the visual conditions were as accurate as possible.
Each task was specifically designed to be more difficult given the eye condition the player was experiencing.
With peripheral vision loss it becomes much harder to make sure the clocks have all been set properly.
The vision effects were accomplished using a combination of custom shaders and post-processing effects.
Each game featured a specific task. In this scene the player must make sure the invitation to the Queen's party have all been done correctly before they are sent.
Blurred vision, light sensitivity and desaturated colours can all be experienced by patients with cataracts.
In this potion sorting game, the player must find the correct potion based on clues given by the Queen.
Once the player has completed all the tasks they are taken to a final scene where they can see how their challenges have come together.
