Incorporating Art into the Business Realm to Solve Problems
The director and principal investigator of The Art of Science Learning and the co-founder of Creating Futures That Work, Harvey Seifter is an arts education pioneer living in New York, NY. Also serving as the president of Seifter Associates, Harvey Seifter specializes in applying art-based education methods to enhance the development of brands, creative leaders, and business strategies.

Through research funded by the National Science Foundation, Mr. Seifter has developed art-based strategies for spurring innovation and collaboration in the workplace. With the use of music, painting, sculpture, and theatrical performances, teams are able to break free from old ways of thinking and conceptualize new ways to solve business problems.

According to Mr. Seifter’s research, one of the biggest obstacles to problem-solving is the frequent tendency to overlook information that is in front of our noses. Especially when we are feeling pressured to solve a problem quickly, we often miss incorporating key data into our decision-making process. However, stepping out of our mental comfort zone can bring unexpected and creative results.

To begin looking at old problems with new eyes, Mr. Seifter suggests drawing a detailed sketch of an object that incorporates multiple points of view. After the drawing is finished, think about what you learned from observing a known object from different points and how you might apply this perspective to workplace challenges.
