DE DROOM VAN PHILO - STEVEN VAN HERREWEGHE

In 'The Dream of Philo' Steven Van Herreweghe tells you about the most staggering TV events and combines his big love for television with his first love, theatre. Steven asked me to design the key art for his show.

We wanted a poster with aesthetics somewhere in between Poltergeist and Masters Of The Universe. Vintage and grungy, but also eighties and early digital 80's.
Steven gets a visit from Philo Farnsworth's spirit. This American farmer's son got inspired at the age of 14 (in 1920) to invent what would become the foundation of television. He created one of the biggest inventions of the 20th century, but died bitter in 1971. He left humanity a creation he wasn't proud of at all. In 2019, Philo wants Steven to tell him what his invention brought to the world. This is where the show starts.

Philo's story is rather dark, and a TV screen tends to be quite intimidating. Especially in a dark room, it's quite a strong source of light. This creates a striking atmosphere our image had to revolve around.

I had a lot of inspiration out of Stephen King books and Stranger Things. Some outtakes of my moodboard:

For the main composition I used an image from a promotional photoshoot and painted it in Procreate.

The challenge when painting this image was to change the direction of his eyes. In the photo he looks away from the camera, but from a commercial perspective it's better to make eye contact with the viewer. That's why I re-drew the position of his eyes in the poster:

I designed the typography for this project partly in Cinema4D and partly in Photoshop. I don't really like Photoshop for 3D typography because it feels kinda forced so I happily switch to Cinema for this part.

The poster even appeared on national television. So happy!
Thanks for watching!
