The Chicago Cubs are one of the most storied franchises in professional baseball, joining what was to become Major League Baseball (MLB) as the Chicago White Stockings in 1876. The team’s World Series success began in unusual fashion, with a 3-3-1 series tie with the St. Louis Browns in 1885. Chicago won 90 regular season games the following year and returned to the World Series, this time losing to St. Louis in six games.

The franchise entered one of its most successful phases soon after taking on the Cubs moniker in 1903. Between 1906 and 1910 the Cubs played in four of five World Series contests, winning in 1907 and 1908. The team by and large maintained a healthy regular season record moving forward, but continued to struggle in World Series matchups, losing six series from 1918 to 1945 with a combined win-loss game record of 24-8.

In 2016, Chicago returned to the World Series for the first time in 71 years and 108 years after the franchise’s last World Series victory. The Cubs faced the Cleveland Indians, a franchise contending with its own 68-year championship drought. Chicago dropped three of the series’ first four games before rebounding in Games 5 and 6 and ultimately capturing a dramatic Game 7 by one run in extra innings. The victory marked the end of the sport’s longest championship drought.
