An interactive installation on typography

An interactive installation on typography

was showcased at International Conference on Typography, Typoday 2013 at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. This installation uses "wave" gesture to play with a word of typography. Typography word is hung across an invisible string that can be plucked by "wave" gesture. Depending upon user's position and her hand's position, string is plucked and corresponding sound is emanated.

String Type is a gesture based interactive audio-visual installation setup at Typography Day 2013.
It uses Microsoft Kinect to detect human body motion and translates certain gestures to onscreen movement as a visual feedback accompanied by sound. The installation plays with the idea of hanging the letters of the word 'typography' on a string and interacting with it in a way you would with a real string by plucking it. You could also move your hands like a real wave and the string would react similarly. Depending on your position with respect to the Kinect sensor, different musical notes would be emanated upon each virtual string pluck. This project was created by Denny George and Harshvardhan Upadhyay and guided by Keyur Sorathia under Embedded Interaction Lab.

The project as a research paper got selected for 5th India Human Computer Interaction Conference under student design consortium.
