Project: Wooden Doll
Origins
We were tasked to conceptualise and design a wooden doll, which was to be made primarily through the use of wood-turning techniques on a wood lathe.
Woodturning
The body was turned from a piece of white ash timber, giving rise to a tapered cylindrical form. Using a spade bit, a recess was created for the 3D printed bulb. The top piece was produced from black walnut; the parts were then sanded and finished by hand with beeswax polish.
3D Printing
A light diffuser was built in the Rhinoceros CAD environment and then printed using an fused deposition modelling 3D printer using translucent PLA filament.
Light assembly
The LED chip used was obtained from a LEDBERG LED spotlight from IKEA. When mounted into the base of the body, the effect was not desirable as the drilled-through hole created a tunnel effect and constricted the beam.
To overcome this, I had to customise a light pipe using an acrylic cylinder and attached it to the face of the LED chip.
