Copperheads - Venomous Snakes in North America

Josh Ruffell is a freelance animal trainer and wildlife safety consultant working in Los Angeles. Providing insight and training for animals in film and television projects, Josh Ruffell has a particular interest in snakes.

One of the venomous snakes in North America is the copperhead, which can make its habitat in a number of different climates as long as certain factors such as adequate sunlight and cover are accessible. Copperheads are pit vipers and are named, quite literally, for their copper-colored heads. A copperhead bite - though serious - is usually not fatal.

Copperheads are a social species. They generally return to the same communal den for winter hibernation each year. During the period before denning they are often found closely together, sunning, feeding, and mating. Copperheads eat a variety of prey including small rodents, birds, and lizards. Like many other snake species, they hold a vital role in controlling rodent populations throughout their range.
