Grab Bag NYC is a collaborative consumption program that provides New Yorkers with an easy way to remember reusable bags and sack the excuses for using plastic bags.
Our goal is to provide convenience for customers and enable them to reduce their use of plastic bags, thereby having a positive effect on the environment. We want New York to set a precedent across the country for lessening the consumption of plastic.
Many New Yorkers intend to bring a reusable bag when they shop, and feel guilty when they take plastic bags because they know that they are bad for the environment.
The average New Yorker uses 20 lbs bags of bags per year, of which only one pound gets recycled. This adds up to 360 billion bags in NYC a year which consumes over 1.6. billion gallons of oil and kills over 100,000 marine animals.
Piloting in South Brooklyn, New York, the program will provide customers with bags at local grocery stores for a small membership fee. Customers simply need to return the bags with in the allotted time frame.
The program will start with grocery stores and expand to liquor stores, dry cleaners and more. Our goal is to provide convenience for customers and enable them to reduce their use of plastic bags, thereby having a positive effect on the environment.
