For his new musical project, Cesare Malfatti has gone back to his personal history, his family and his roots. Rummaging through private and public archives, he has become fascinated by the character of an ancestor and the historical events that he went through. Valeriano Malfatti was a member of the parliament of Vienna and mayor of Rovereto under the Austro-Hungarian empire before the Great War, he was committed to the defense of the territory of Trentino and its people during the forced evacuation before the outbreak of war. After being accused of irredentism, he was interned in the Katzenau camp and at the end of the war, when Trentino becomed Italian territory, Valeriano was elected Senator of the Kingdom.
The lyrics of the songs are inspired by these historical facts that for their complexity deserve to be told and explained. He therefore decided to contextualize each piece with the help of phrases and photos taken from all the consulted sources. In a very free way, without any historiographic claim.
And so a real newspaper was born, printed in roto-offset in an old typography, on gray paper, with heavy inks and a pungent odour. The graphics are based on the artistic avant-garde style of the early twentieth century, especially futurism and its provocative and revolutionary content. In Depero’s way, the pages of the newspaper become architectures of texts and typefaces in a game of overlapping white, black with a hint of red.
