The MINI configurator uses individual layers with depth channels for every part of the car, which are assembled live to make it exactly as configurable as the real one. Therefore hundreds of layers had to be produced for 20 different views and a 360° walkaround animation while maintaining a quality and resolution that are normally reserved for print ads.

Parts like the car paints and armrests are colored and composited live too to reduce the amount of parts that have to be produced. They are rendered with a grey albedo and in different layers for the car paint.
We already did configurator content for BMW cars but with far less different perspectives and a less artistic, more realistic and flat look, so that was our main challenge.

I was involved from the very first meetings until the recent 2018 facelift. My roles included data prep, cameras, materials, lighting and rendering. I also worked on the pipeline and did compositing at later stages.

This pipeline was later used for our BMW Motorrad configurator projects and is now applied to our updated BMW configurator.
A limited, half resolution online version is available on the MINI website. Furthermore it is used at POS, for the ordering process and for personalized applications that show your own car.
