Mitchell Blutt's profile

Michael J. Fox Foundation PATH to PD Study

Dr. Mitchell Blutt, a Weill Cornell Medical College professor in the school's department of medicine and the CEO of Consonance Capital, has been part of the board of directors of many organizations. One group Dr. Mitchell Blutt served is the Michael J. Fox Foundation, a nonprofit which focuses on research into Parkinson's disease and its treatment.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation has announced PATH to PD, a wide-ranging program which looks into the development of Parkinson's disease from multiple angles. This $6 million program looks at all known elements of the development of Parkinson's disease, including environmental health, genetic predisposition, and aging. Three separate research teams, each experts in one aspect of the field, will receive $2 million each to investigate these factors.

This wide-ranging initiative stems from the discoveries made about Parkinson's disease in the last two decades. This research has indicated that these factors create significant variability in how the disease presents, progresses, and responds to treatment. As a result, a wide-ranging holistic study of this type is necessary to find ways to tailor treatments to various components of the broader disease, such as neurotoxin-related neurodegeneration or the effects of genetic changes on cellular and molecular biology.
