A common misconception holds that arthritis only affects senior citizens. However, children can be diagnosed with various subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), of which symptoms include fever and a salmon-colored rash that might present itself weeks or even months before joint pain. Having the affliction doesn't have to limit one's potential, however, and Charcandrick West is a prime example of this. West scored three touchdowns in his first high school football game, but woke up in incredible pain the following day. Symptoms lasted for about a month before suddenly vanishing, only to return again the following season. He was eventually diagnosed with systemic JIA and prescribed a biologic that has since kept symptoms from reoccurring.

Now, following a successful collegiate career at Abilene Christian University, West is a veteran of four seasons in the National Football League (NFL). The 5-foot-10, 205-pound running back has 999 rushing yards and 552 receiving yards to go along with a combined 12 touchdowns in 49 games, all of which have been played with the Kansas City Chiefs.
