CAMFT Looks at New Secondary Signer Law Involving LMFTs

Based in Irvine, California, licensed psychologist and social worker Dr. Miriam Galindo operates a private practice in family therapy. Actively involved in her field, Dr. Miriam Galindo maintains membership in the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT).

CAMFT reports that on January 1, 2018, a new law went into effect that changes the role licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) are able to play in involuntary treatment situations. Under California law, a person who may be suffering a serious mental health episode can be held involuntarily for 72 hours, and that time can be extended up to 14 days after further evaluation.

The changes to the law allow LMFTs to act as secondary signers for a second 14-day extension, provided the first signer is the physician or psychologist who evaluated the patient. The second extension is typically granted in cases in which the patient exhibited suicidal behavior during the initial 14 days of the hold.
