This was the first time i went abroad for an artistic activity/residency and also my first time in Latvia – a totally unknown country and culture for me. The experience could not have been better. Even though it was the furthest i had ever been from my country, Portugal, i felt quite at home, surrounded by people whose wisedom and kindness were both inspiring and outstanding. 

The language was very diferent but it was not a big obstacle: communication was possible most of the time, again due to a kind reception and an effort that enables understanding. 

It was an amazing opportunity to work in the same place with all the artists participating in the plenaire. To observe and learn from the way each one worked, get to know other art forms and graphic approaches, to ask for advice and follow suggestions, make experiences and get a bit out of the comfort zone: these are some key elements that can make us grow as artists; and this plenaire made it possible. 

Ventspils was also a pleasant surprise. Having the chance to visit the city, its museums and public places, walking and cycling around from seaside to gardens: it was more than one could ask for and an insightful way to learn a bit of latvian culture and history. I feel particularly lucky to have met so many special and unique people, with fantastic work and work ethics.
