Three Tips for New High School Wrestlers

Before graduating from Phillipsburg High School, Andrew Horun competed on the school’s wrestling team. In addition to his athletic participation, Andrew “Drew” Horun has also coached sports such as soccer and wrestling.

For novices to the sport, high school wrestling can seem very intimidating. While you will not win every match, these three tips will help you on your way to becoming the best wrestler you can be.

1. Technique - When you are just starting out, your main focus should be on technique. With solid technique, you can easily come out victorious over a much stronger opponent. Instead of trying to learn every move you can, stick to the basics and master them. Doing a few moves really well will pay off more than having a large variety of mediocre moves.

2. Attack - While being able to defend is crucial to regaining a lost advantage, staying on the offensive ensures you are the one controlling the match. Before each move, know what you plan on doing next and act as quickly as possible, never giving your opponent the time to take control of the match.

3. Positivity - Remain positive and keep your emotions in check. Losing can certainly be frustrating, but letting the frustration cloud your judgment might be enough to cost you the match. Instead, keep your composure by thinking positive thoughts and reminding yourself that winning is not everything. Every loss can teach you valuable lessons that make you a better wrestler.
