Mark J Holterman's profile

The Hannah Sunshine Foundation

An accomplished pediatric surgeon, Mark Holterman, MD, PhD, educates medical students and residents as a professor of surgery and pediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Mark Holterman also supports nonprofit organizations and helped to establish The Hannah Sunshine Foundation.

The Hannah Sunshine Foundation was inspired by Hannah Warren, Tucker Beau Hyatt, and Sarah Hughes. Born without a trachea, Hannah Warren received a windpipe that was grown from her own stem cells. Suffering from systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA), Sarah Hughes and Tucker Beau Hyatt were successfully treated with Celltex Therapeutics Corporation’s stem-cell therapy using their own stem cells.

It is estimated that the incurable autoimmune disorder SJIA affects 30,000 children in the United States. Sarah Hughes experienced joint inflammation and stiffness from the disorder from infancy, leading to the development of the related disorder dysautonomia, which caused many additional conditions. At the age of 23, she was treated with her own adult stem cells with the help of Celltex Therapeutics’ proprietary technology. In the days and months thereafter, her condition progressively improved to the point where she is able to lead a much more normal life.
