Quinoa - David Lynch

Quinoa 2006, motion picture, Absurda, Los Angeles.
Close up, of Lynch's face and focus on his gesture, the harsh sound at the background follows his hand open and close, creates a horror feeling to the viewers.
When Lynch waiting the Quinoa, he like sit outside and talk a smoke, this time the camera gives a close up of his smoke and his eyes shiny in the dark, which can't see very clear on this picture.
That contrast black and white, the candle is flashing at the back.
David Lynch born in America in 1946, he is an American director, screenwriter, producer, painter, musician, actor, and photographer. His film style mainly is darkness and violent, with contract visual, sound impact expression technique, become a figure of the non-mainstream film and has been labelled as “the first popular Surrealist”.

I believe in some of his early experiences, to his later film style to bring some impact, such as 1966 in Philadelphia, at this time he lived in a poor area, although the living space is quite large, often can see someone died in front of his house, the door has been crashed twice, even the glass window has some bullet marks, he experiences the dark side of the public life, the violence and corruption encountered gives his future creation a profound impact. He described the time as the best and worst day of his life, and he began to make movies at this time. In 1967, when he is a student, his first short film "Six Figures Getting Sick", has expressed the greed of humans in the daily life. This four minutes’ short film contains four times repeat of one minute ‘moving painting of six sick men vomiting’, the background sound of a siren loop and the contrast colour of black and white with red and purple. These types of film style continue in his later films. Also, the spoken word performance by David Lynch recorded during production of the Lynch feature, Inland Empire (2006).

This performance shows the handling describing David Lynch’s preferred method for cooking quinoa. In a normal teaching cooking video clips, the colour should be colourful to make the foods look delicious and the camera should be a focus on the foods instead of the chief. In this performance, which Lynch teaches how to cook quinoa, the harsh, ominous music and the dark, garish lighting all make this performance watches strange, harsh and mysterious. Cooking quinoa needs an obsessive kind of patience, when Lynch waiting it boiled done, he like normal people drink wines and sitting outside waiting. And this time he told a story which happens in summer 1965, on a train drive from Athens, Greece to Paris, I do not quite understand his story, but the story is interesting when he talking about Jackie’s girlfriend never drinks coke cola, and he buys the coke cola to her, and she sprays out, but she said she likes it. And also feels strange on what he's talking about he gives a man a coin and the man give back to him a 4-inch times 3-inch gold paper money and he uses this paper money buys a coke cola and receive many coins, that he even cannot use both hands to hold them. When he tells the story, the camera was close up to his face and his gesture of his hand open and out, with the harsh music and the candle and the lights glowing a mysterious light, this is a film style which usually can see from his films. Lynch has skilled been able to physically embody the ominous atmosphere that he constructs in his films.

Lynch from the beginning of the creating films, he preferred to show a dark side of human nature, which I think this is impact form his early-stage life, his singular, vanguard and his visual contains contract, impact all makes his works emit a unique personal charm.
