GlobalFoundries in Expansion Mode

Richard Busch serves as founding principal of The Busch Group, a technology management consulting company based in Austin, Texas. Prior to this role, Richard Busch served as a vice president of IP strategy and product line management at GlobalFoundries, where he developed company intellectual portfolio (IP) strategy for the 130nm-7nm technology nodes and collaborated with senior executives to increase IP investment fourfold. 

A leader in semiconductor design and manufacturing, Silicon Valley-based GlobalFoundries comprises 18,000 employees in 14 locations across three continents. In early 2017, the company announced plans to expand the manufacturing capacity of four semiconductor fabrication plants (known as fabs) in Germany, Singapore, and the United States. The company has 10 fabs altogether. When completed, total company 300 mm wafer output is expected to increase by around 20 percent. All expansions are slated to be completed by 2020. 

The firm also will establish a new 300mm fab in Chengdu, China, in cooperation with the local government. The first phase is planned for completion in 2018, while the second phase will be completed in 2019. In full production, the plant is expected to produce around 1 million wafers annually.
