Choosing a Tennis Racquet for a Beginner

Since 1982, Richard Busch has served in increasingly responsible roles within the semiconductor industry. The founder and CEO of The Busch Group, a consulting firm serving international technology organizations, Richard Busch, now based in Austin, Texas, enjoys playing tennis in his free time.

Players who are new to tennis may wish to use a tennis racquet that is easy to swing and offers a better chance of hitting the ball. The easiest racquets for a beginner are typically lighter, at approximately 7.8 to 9.6 ounces. A lighter racquet puts more force behind the ball and compensates for a beginner's slower swing.

A more flexible frame, by contrast, will absorb some of the power behind the swing. This means that for a beginner, a less flexible frame is more appropriate.

Beginners also can benefit from a larger head, as these racquets are more forgiving in terms of accuracy. An oversized head, typically measuring 105 to 130 square inches, will allow the player to hit more consistently.
