An Introduction to Semiconductors

As founder and CEO of The Busch Group, Richard Busch of Austin, Texas, draws on 35 years of experience in the semiconductor industry. Richard Busch has held a number of high-level positions in the development and placement of semiconductor product lines.

A semiconductor is so called because it conducts electricity only under certain specified conditions. This places its conductivity somewhere between that of a full conductor, such as metal, and an insulator, such as ceramic.

Semiconductors have broad uses in industry because their conditional conductivity allows them to control electrical current. Developers accomplish this end by adding certain impurities, known as dopants, to the original material. Some such materials create semiconductors that carry primarily negatively charged current, such as that in a wire, while others carry positively charged electron deficiencies.

One of the best-known semiconductors in industry today is silicon. This material serves as a foundational element in most integrated circuits, also known as microchips. Other common semiconductors include gallium arsenide, or GaAs, used in amplifying devices, as well as elements such as carbon, boron, sulfur, and arsenic.
