Redskins Make Cuts to Finalize 2017 Regular Season

The recipient of a bachelor's degree in industrial management from Auburn University, David F. Baucom is a United States Navy retired rear admiral (RADM) who accumulated 34 years of service. In his free time, David Baucom enjoys following his favorite National Football League (NFL) team, the Washington Redskins.

A little over a week prior to the 2017 regular season, Washington began finalizing its 53-man roster by releasing hopefuls, including players who played prominent roles with the team in years past. The team’s starting running back in 2016, Matt Jones, was perhaps the most well-known players among those released. Selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Jones did not show enough consistency in his two seasons with the team and struggled holding onto the ball.

One of the team's early cuts was veteran safety Will Blackmon, who played 30 games with the team in the previous two seasons and recorded three interceptions, four forced fumbles, and 90 combined tackles. Washington also dealt tight end Derek Carrier to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a 2018 seventh-round draft pick. Despite a solid preseason, Carrier was ultimately pushed out due to the emergence of rookie Jeremy Sprinkle. The team also released quarterback Nate Sudfeld, wide receiver Maurice Harris, and linebacker Peter Robertson, among others.
