WIP - The Mental Issue
Concept for a magazine

For a magazine project, we had to choose a concept in groups and go in different directions individually.
Our concept was no consistent art direction (it'd be shaped after the content) and I chose mental illness as my topic.

Due to negative stereotypes, I wanted to give a new, nuanced view of mentally ill artists.
The magazine combines facts and science with interviews and personal stories.
The “big” article focuses on two artists and which possibilities their illness brings them instead of just pain.

I chose fold out pages for the main article because I didn’t feel 2 pages would do the artists justice but 4 pages for each looked clunky as well. Both of their works are massive in two very different ways and seeing as this isn’t exactly a conventional magazine, I thought it was fitting.
The grid of the pages comes from a photo taken of one of her art rooms. Various works are placed inside of the sections and there is as little text as possible
For Wiltshire, I used guidelines that made the article easier to read for autists. This includes the use of white, black and blue, neutral sans serif font, short sections of text, and the use of lists.
