Rationale:

This is an imagined landscape – an altered version of reality. This work arose from a body of visual and audio recordings of time spent in places that are significant to me in the Mayo countryside and coastline. I re-imagined what I saw through the lens as a flat digital painting, reconstructing real spaces for the two-dimensional screen. A virtual world was created by altering elements from the natural landscape in these images through digital painting and sound design. The subdued colour palette and use of layered flat shapes was influenced by the painting The Dream by Henri Rousseau. The flattened visuals are composited with a sense of depth and light, suggesting real life space.
By projecting this piece I aim to bring a sense of the experience of these spaces to the viewer. The large-scale imagery and ambient sound allow the viewer to experience a sense of escape and connection with nature through a virtual representation.
