Aubrey Gladstone's profile

Safety Preparations for an Overwater Flight

Aubrey Gladstone is a commercial pilot and president of Gladstone Consulting Inc., a firm specializing in consulting services for corporate liquidation, problem resolution, and litigation support. With over 35 years of experience as a pilot, Aubrey Gladstone has enjoyed several tours of Europe in a small aircraft and has flown across the Atlantic. When flying small planes across bodies of water, several precautions should be taken to ensure the safety of pilots and passengers.

Federal regulations require that flights that exceed 30 minutes of flying time or extend 100 nautical miles from the shore have the following items on board:
- Life preservers with an approved survivor locator light.
- Life rafts to accommodate everyone on the flight.
- At least one pyrotechnic signaling device.
- A portable water-resistant emergency radio that floats.
- A lifeline
- A survival kit appropriate for the route that is being flown.

Flights that extend beyond 50 nautical miles from the shore are required to have a flotation device on board the aircraft for every passenger.

The owner and operator of the aircraft is required to conduct standard preflight inspections and should observe weather patterns along the expected route. In addition, he or she is responsible for the maintenance, inspection, and servicing of all safety and survival equipment.
