Kipaf - Steet painting

2014 - 2017,on going painted project, chalk and charcoal on pavement
My intention was to draw and paint with dry pigments ( colour chunks) using the roads of the city as a surface, like a street performer.
The working process had to be quick and open to improvisation, painted with solid chunks of earth colour rubbed on to the road directly. The surface was rough and textured. The space had to be occupied from the gathered crowd and traffic, often leading to questions and interesting dialogs with my city people.
Kolkata is an Indian metropolis, busy in terms of traffic and population-keeping this activity always surrounded by several onlookers, regularly some of the spectators participate and thus forming a group of people working on a single image/form. Gradually this activity became a part of the promotional activity of an artist run performance art festival in Kolkata (KIPAF)-roughly 35 such drawings on road were made in a span of 3 months (November 2014-January2015) in several parts of Kolkata.
The works were never measured - as they perished (walking over) soon after completion
