Amnesty International's Efforts for Earthquake Victims

A leader in the entertainment industry, Bruce Furst serves as president of Ashber Corporation in Austin, Texas. Outside of work, Bruce Furst contributes to Amnesty International, which is working to help the victims of the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal.

The earthquakes destroyed more than 650,000 homes and damaged more than 250,000 others. Although the government of Nepal began to distribute grants in 2016 to help landowners rebuild homes, approximately 25 percent of the country’s residents do not own land, which leaves them without access to the government assistance program.

Nepalese citizens without land can access the program only if they obtain permission from landowners or have neighbors vouch for them. This stipulation disproportionately affects the most vulnerable in the country, including women and those of the lower castes. To support individuals excluded from the program, Amnesty International is asking people to sign a petition requesting that the prime minister act on behalf of disadvantaged groups.
