Bowdoin College recently presented a new piece of choral music focused on what it means to be American. Written by the college's Associate Professor of Music Vineet Shende, the new work bears the title of “E Pluribus Unum, Non Ex Pluribus Divisum” (Out of Many One, Not Out of Many Division).

Vineet Shende chose to create “E Pluribus Unum, Non Ex Pluribus Divisum” as a commentary on increasing anti-immigration perspectives and xenophobic tendencies. He took the words and melody of the United States national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and wove it together with various songs of Mexican and other foreign heritage, demonstrating how diversity creates a unifying harmony.

Bowdoin College presented the premiere of Shende's new piece through a collaboration between the Mozart Mentors Orchestra and the Bowdoin Chorus. The performances took place on May 4th and 5th, 2017, at the school's Studzinski Recital Hall.
