Collaboration with Ubisoft | Motion Capture Helmet

I worked in a 13-person team for redesigning the first-person camera headpiece and mocap suit used in Ubisoft Toronto’s motion capture studio. Our interdisciplinary research and practice involved with materialization, user experience, industrial design, 3D printing, engineering and rapid prototyping. The final works have been praised by Ubisoft staff and potentially change Ubisoft’s motion capture process.

The headpiece is for actors to wear during the motion capture performance. It has a first-person camera forward and a screen towards actor’s face. The screen simultaneously plays what the camera is recording. The content recorded will finally become a video game’s first person scene. Their old headpiece was not well-designed for actors to have a clear vision. In our new design, we 3D printed a monitor holder and used the optical lens to adjust the focus.
