In 2013, Forbes named Austin the fastest-growing city in the United States, and the city has continued to grow at an impressive rate in the years since. According to U.S. Census Bureau data released at the end of 2016, Austin had a five-year growth rate larger than any other metropolitan area in the United States with the exception of Charlotte, North Carolina. The Austin metro area, which includes Caldwell, Williamson, Bastrop, Hays, and Travis counties, grew by more than 16 percent between 2010 and 2015 with a current population of 1.9 million.

Looking at growth just within city limits, Austin still ranks number two, with a similar growth rate of 16 percent between 2010 and 2015. The only city with a higher growth rate was New Orleans. Areas within the city with the largest amount of growth include Central Austin and downtown, as well as North Lamar Boulevard and lower Shoal Creek.
