Published in the May 2017 issue of Pediatrics, researchers have penned a report studying the correlation between adult immunization behaviors and the likelihood that the children they care for will also opt to receive immunizations. For the purposes of the study, the authors correlated data for more than 450,000 Oregon children aged 9 months to 17 years old.

They found that children were more than two-and-a-half times as likely to get their flu immunization if their adult caregiver chose to get one. Conversely, if a parent chose to stop receiving immunizations, the child would be twice as likely to miss an influenza immunization. Through this information, and by studying other sub-categories in these datasets, the study authors came to the conclusion that vaccine availability, access, and education for parents could lead to more children getting the immunizations they need.
