The challenge of this project was to come up with a revolutionary item involving food after studying Emily Pilloton's book, Design Revolution. A team of three of us began researching misconceptions about food. Our research led us to find that an overwhelming number of children don't know where food comes from. We repeatedly heard that "salad comes from a bag" or "my mom buys it at the store." Our solution was to develop a home gardening system that would include everything a child would need to grow 3 ingredients. The gardening set would include the planter, the seeds, instructions, an adjustable/removable grow light, and a recipe for the children to actually make the food they grew into a meal at the end of the growth process.
My First Garden is an interactive solution that educates, fosters responsibility and leaves children with a feeling of accomplishment and promotes the farm to fork mentality.
