Health Benefits of Meditation

Securities executive Anil Jethmal has served as chairman’s counsel with several prominent New York firms, including Smith Barney and Gruntal & Company. In his free time, Anil Jethmal enjoys meditating to relax and improve focus.

Over the past several decades, researchers have studied the physical and emotional health benefits of meditation. From a physical standpoint, a study at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine demonstrated that 66 percent of subjects could reduce their high blood pressure medication though the use of meditation. Its practice may also have cardioprotective effects, primarily by lowering concentrations of the heart-disease marker known as C-reactive protein. Meditation may also reduce the body’s inflammatory response, resulting in a stronger immune system.

In terms of mental health benefits, meditation has long been practiced as a stress-reduction technique. By downregulating the activity of the amygdala, or the seat of negative emotions in the brain, meditation can improve individuals’ ability to stay calm in acutely stressful situations. Other benefits of meditation include improved sleep, reduced depression symptoms, and increased empathy.
