How to Create a Successful Food Drive

Upon graduating from Texas A&M University, Micheal (Mike) Albert Hernandez III began working with D&M Leasing, a car leasing company in Dallas, Texas, and eventually purchased an interest in it in 1990. After entering semi-retirement, Mike Hernandez III founded OP10.33 to support initiatives that improve the City of Brownsville and the Cameron County area. He also has offered his support to Vision with Values for the Valley (The V3 Army), which held a food drive in May 2016.

Here are some tips for a successful food drive.

1. Pick a visible food drop-off location that is easily accessible to as many people as possible. Popular choices include schools, gymnasiums, and places of business in areas with high footfall.

2. Make it clear which items will be accepted by the drive in promotional material to reduce waste and respect supporters’ time and efforts.

3. Encourage financial contributions in addition to donations of food by setting a goal for the drive. Make it clear to donors that they have a choice between the two and designate a volunteer to take monetary donations at the drive’s location.
